A properly maintained cutting board can indeed last a lifetime. Here are some key tips to ensure longevity:
- Regular Cleaning: Wash with warm, soapy water after each use. Avoid soaking it or putting it in the dishwasher, especially for wood boards.
- Sanitizing: Occasionally sanitize with a mixture of vinegar and water or a diluted bleach solution (1 tbsp bleach per gallon of water) to kill bacteria.
- Dry Thoroughly: Always dry the board completely before storing to prevent warping or mold growth.
- Oil Regularly: For wooden boards, apply food-grade mineral oil every few weeks to prevent drying and cracking.
- Remove Stains and Odors: Sprinkle with salt or baking soda and scrub with a lemon to clean deeper and neutralize smells.
- Avoid Cross-Contamination: Use separate boards for raw meat, vegetables, and bread if possible.
